Environmental Justice Project

A cooperative project between the Long Island Science Center & Environmental Protection Agency

Mission Statement:

The Environmental Justice Project is a multifaceted project designed to create opportunities for citizen scientists to investigate the air and water quality in their local environment. The aim of this project is to engage the public with their community’s environmental and ecological health and create a pipeline for STEM jobs by providing opportunities to engage in hands-on field data collection and educational programs.

The first and central facet of this project is the seasonal-term collection of environmental data which are indicative of the overall health of the air and waterbodies in the Riverhead area. This data, as well as more information about the ecological role and impacts of each parameter investigated is accessible through the Long Island Science Center website. Additionally, this project includes the operation of a field study program, in which community members can join our environmental justice interns and staff in the field to learn how we conduct our study and test a sample of the air and water with our team. This project also involves the operation of a mobile Environmental Education program which covers the significance of the ecological role of air, water, and biodiversity, especially relating to our role as humans within the natural world.

What we Do

The Environmental Justice Interns and Staff traveled to 6 sites to test the air and 7 waterbodies to measure certain qualities that indicate their overall health. Click the tabs to learn more about the testing parameters and the findings from the Summer-Fall 2023!
